King Solomon's Mines

King Solomon's Mines by Rider Haggard

Country: United Kingdom

Series: Allan Quatermain Series

Genre: Lost World

Publisher: Cassell and Company

Publication date: 1885

Pages: 320

Preceded by: "Magepa the Buck"

Followed by: She: A History of Adventure

Plot and Summary

Allan Quatermain, an adventurer and white hunter based in Durban, in what is now South Africa,
is approached by aristocrat Sir Henry Curtis and his friend Captain Good, seeking his help finding
Sir Henry's brother, who was last seen travelling north into the unexplored interior on a quest for
the fabled King Solomon's Mines. Quatermain has a mysterious map purporting to lead to the mines, but
had never taken it seriously. However, he agrees to lead an expedition in return for a share of the treasure,
or a stipend for his son if he is killed along the way. He has little hope they will return alive,
but reasons that he has already outlived most people in his profession, so dying in this manner at least ensures
that his son will be provided for. They also take along a mysterious native, Umbopa, who seems more regal, handsome
and well-spoken than most porters of his class, but who is very anxious to join the party.

Travelling by oxcart, they reach the edge of a desert, but not before a hunt in which a wounded elephant
claims the life of a servant. They continue on foot across the desert, almost dying of thirst before finding
the oasis shown halfway across on the map. Reaching a mountain range called Suliman Berg, they climb a peak
(one of "Sheba's Breasts") and enter a cave where they find the frozen corpse of José Silvestre (also spelt Silvestra),
the 16th-century Portuguese explorer who drew the map in his own blood. That night, a second servant dies from the cold,
so they leave his body next to Silvestra's, to "give him a companion". They cross the mountains into a raised valley,
lush and green, known as Kukuanaland. The inhabitants have a well-organised army and society and speak an ancient dialect of
IsiZulu. Kukuanaland's capital is Loo, the destination of a magnificent road from ancient times. The city is dominated by
a central royal kraal.

They soon meet a party of Kukuana warriors who are about to kill them when Captain Good nervously fidgets with his
false teeth, making the Kukuanas recoil in fear. Thereafter, to protect themselves, they style themselves "white men
from the stars"—sorcerer-gods—and are required to give regular proof of their divinity, considerably straining both
their nerves and their ingenuity.

They are brought before King Twala, who rules over his people with ruthless violence. He came to power years before
when he murdered his brother, the previous king, and drove his brother's wife and infant son, Ignosi, out into the desert to die.
Twala's rule is unchallenged. An evil, impossibly ancient hag named Gagool is his chief advisor. She roots out any potential
opposition by ordering regular witch hunts and murdering without trial all those identified as traitors. When she singles out
Umbopa for this fate, it takes all Quatermain's skill to save his life.

Gagool, it appears, has already sensed what Umbopa soon after reveals: he is Ignosi, the rightful king of the Kukuanas.
A rebellion breaks out, the Englishmen gaining support for Ignosi by taking advantage of their foreknowledge of a lunar
eclipse to claim that they will black out the moon as proof of Ignosi's claim. (In early editions, this was a solar eclipse;
Haggard changed it after realising that his description of a solar eclipse was not realistic[13]) The Englishmen join Ignosi's
army in a furious battle. Although outnumbered, the rebels overthrow Twala, and Sir Henry lops off his head in a duel.

The Englishmen also capture Gagool, who reluctantly leads them to King Solomon's Mines. She shows them a treasure room
inside a mountain, carved deep within the living rock and full of gold, diamonds, and ivory. She then treacherously sneaks
out while they are admiring the hoard and triggers a secret mechanism that closes the mine's vast stone door. However, a brief
scuffle with a beautiful Kukuana woman named Foulata—who had become attached to Good after nursing him through his injuries
sustained in the battle—causes her to be crushed under the stone door, though not before fatally stabbing Foulata. Their scant
store of food and water rapidly dwindling, the trapped men prepare to die also. After a few despairing days sealed in the dark
chamber, they find an escape route, bringing with them a few pocketfuls of diamonds from the immense trove, enough to make them rich.

The Englishmen bid farewell to a sorrowful Ignosi and return to the desert, assuring him that they value his friendship
but must return to be with their own people, Ignosi in return promising them that they will be venerated and honoured among
his people forever. Taking a different route, they find Sir Henry's brother stranded in an oasis by a broken leg, unable to go
forward or back. They return to Durban and eventually to England, wealthy enough to live comfortable lives.

2019.09.04 03:00 autotldr South Africa's politicians feed anti-foreigner violence

This is the best tl;dr I could make, original reduced by 83%. (I'm a bot)
Attacks against foreigners and foreign-run businesses have erupted regularly in the past decades in South Africa.
Although exact data is difficult to come by, it's estimated some 1.5 to 2 million migrants live in South Africa, a country with a population of 58 million.
These kinds of statements imply that immigration and lapsed border control are somehow responsible for South Africa's considerable social problems rather than the government's failure to tackle crime, lack of services, poverty and corruption, says Landau.
At the same time, Malema regularly makes inflammatory comments about 'Boers', Jews and southeast Asians and is often accused of inciting racial divisions in South Africa.
President Cyril Ramaphosa said he "Condemned violence against foreign nationals in South Africa" in a statement issued by his office on Monday - more than a week after the first attacks broke out.
According to Human Rights Watch, "Virtually no one has been convicted for past outbreaks of xenophobic violence, including the Durban violence of April 2015 that displaced thousands of foreign nationals."

2019.04.30 12:21 ZachofTables The Palsbara Buster: Three Myths of BDS and Omar Barghouti

A couple of weeks ago, I covered a story about BDS co-founder and leader Omar Barghouti not being allowed to enter the United States, which was met with much whining by the Palsbara crowd as usual. I’d like to take the opportunity to bust some surrounding myths of BDS and Omar himself. (h/t/ Daled Amos).
Myth #1: BDS is a Palestinian Movement.
BDS’ entire credibility hinges upon being seen as a movement created by the Palestinians to help the Palestinians, but neither claim is true. Here’s a claim right from BDS’ website:
We, representatives of Palestinian civil society, call upon international civil society organizations and people of conscience all over the world to impose broad boycotts and implement divestment initiatives against Israel similar to those applied to South Africa in the apartheid era. We appeal to you to pressure your respective states to impose embargoes and sanctions against Israel. We also invite conscientious Israelis to support this Call, for the sake of justice and genuine peace.
But in reality BDS wasn’t started or supported by the Palestinian people. Ilan Pappe, who is no Zionist shill, already let the cat out of the bag on BDS' founding:
Ruba Salih: “Well, the Palestinians launched the BDS”
Ilan Pappe: “Yes, not really but yes. (pulls face) For historical record, yes”
Ruba Salih: “It’s important”
Ilan Pappe: “It’s not true but it’s important”
So if BDS wasn’t created by the Palestinians, who was it created by? Well, us pro-Israel folks have known this for a long time, but Palsbarists have never been interested in the truth of their own movement. The reality is that BDS was created in 2000 at the Durban Conference, a gathering of leftist “human rights activists” who were supposed to work against racism, but instead decided to bash the one country they all agreed to hate: Israel. This is also where the “Israel is apartheid” libel was first introduced outside of fringe anti-Israel circles. It may not have had the name “BDS” but the Durban Conference is where the modern international movement to boycott Israel started. By the way, that same “anti-racism” conference is the one where this flier was being flown. Something for the “anti-Zionist not anti-Semitic” crowd to chew over.
It wasn’t until four years later that the 170 NGOs that the BDSers love to cite as “Palestinian civil society” made the statement quoted above. But of course, Norman Finkelstein busted this myth too in his infamous “BDS is a cult” video.. He pointed out that the NGOs in question are one man operations in offices based in Ramallah. When Palestinian civil society is asked to turn out to support boycott, they don’t go. The reality is that the Palestinian people buy Israeli products all the time when they easily could choose not to (though I’m sure the Palsbarists here will have an excuse for that as well.)
Nyth #2: BDS is non-violent.
BDS is routinely described as “peaceful” or “non-violent” by its supporters and/or apologists. Barghouti himself has been described as a peaceful guy too. Here’s one example:
Nothing is wrong in what you mentioned. He is a man doing his best to advocate for Palestinians and to put pressure on Israel, PEACEFULLY. He is a role model for all Palestinians.
The reality is that BDS is kind of like many other political movements: nonviolent…until they meet someone who disagrees with them. BDS activists have engaged in assault, threats, violence, vandalism, intimidation, and all manner of violent behavior, as you can read about in further detail here. If you’re not big on reading, maybe try listening to one of BDS’ victims who happens to be a person of color, if that’s the sort of thing you care about.
It isn’t just the thuggish footsoldiers of BDS who are cool with violence. The leadership is quite supportive of “””resistance,””” that famous Palsbarist euphemism for mass murder and terrorism. Here’s the official BDS website:
Last week, the Palestinian BDS National Committee called for a wave of actions and protests in solidarity with the Palestinian popular resistance…
October 2015 was in the midst of the Knife Intifada, so I would really appreciate it if the local BDS apologists wouldn’t try and gaslight us by pretending that the BDS were referring to some other form of “Palestinian popular resistance.”
Omar Barghouti is also a big fan of “resistance.” Some quotes from him:
"No, we most definitely have a moral and legal right to an armed resistance against the military occupation of our land, even according to international law, as long as we attack legitimate targets, that is, the occupation, settlers [i.e., Israeli civilians] and people who are armed. We don't attack anyone who doesn't fight indiscriminately...the resistance is not an ideology or dogma. We cannot be neutral, but have to think about ways to resist that are suitable for our situation and goals, at every stage [of the struggle against Israel]..."
“He justified terrorism against Israelis, defending the Palestinians’ right to ‘resistance by any means, including armed resistance.”
“The media focuses only on one form of resistance, which we are proud of - we’re not ashamed to have armed resistance as well as peaceful resistance… people under occupation have a right to resist by all means."
Canary Mission has plenty more, though I would expect the BDS Apologist Crowd to move the goalposts from “Barghouti is a peaceful guy” to “Barghouti only supports violence against settlers, who deserve to be murdered for the crime of not being Arab.” That’s how these conversations tend to go.
Myth #3: Barghouti’s Hypocrisy
I pointed out in the original post that Barghouti was a hypocrite for choosing to immigrate to Israel and attend university there, and his allies got very offended by this. They claimed he had no choice and that Israel was the closest to his “homeland” he could get. I guess they forgot he could live under the PA, but that would mean living without the freedoms or high standard of living that Israel provides. But the hypocrisy isn’t over yet, because in addition to living and studying in Israel, Barghouti then decided to lie about it. Like his apologists on this sub, he too claims he had no choice but to study in Israel:
In 2009, PACBI (Palestinian Campaign for the Academic and Cultural Boycott of Israel) of whom Barghouti is a founding member, stated that Palestinian citizens of Israel or Palestinians carrying Israeli ID cards have no other possibility than to study in Israeli institutions and as such cannot be asked to join the academic boycott. Ma’an
“Oppressed people don’t have a choice of where they go to school.”
The idea that Barghouti, who went from the USA to Israel of his own free will, is an “oppressed person” is pretty hilarious on its own. But that’s not all: there are more than twenty universities in the West Bank and Gaza that he could attend but chose not to. Other Israeli Arabs who aren’t hypocrites go and study in the West Bank. Thousands of them in fact. But Barghouti didn’t do this because he cares more about his education and himself than he does his "principles." Because like most Palsbarists, he doesn’t actually have principles, he just has talking points that he uses when it’s convenient and discards at the first available opportunity. He doesn’t live the BDS lifestyle and neither do the Palestinian people that BDS claims to represent.
That is why BDS, and the pro-Palestinian movement it supports, has no moral or intellectual legitimacy. Consider that Palsbara…busted!

2019.01.16 07:17 uexbruce African National Congress Election Manifesto Cites Blockchain As the Game Changer

South Africa is gearing for the election coming this May. Cyril Ramaphosa, the current South African President is gearing up for the coming elections, and his party, the African National Congress has already released its manifesto in which they have talked about Blockchain as the modern tool for change.
South Africa has been plagued by the past Zuma government with 10-years of misgovernance and chaos. Now people have high-hopes from Cyril Ramaphosa and his ANC to take them towards a brighter future with meaningful change, honesty, and transparency.
The president during his latest speech in the Moses Mabhida stadium in the coastal city of Durban looked more of company’s CEO than the President of the Country. Mr.Ramaphosa during his speech, he talked about the changes with the incorporation of the latest technological advancements and how the fourth industrial revolution is on the cards.
During his speech, the current president emphasized the need for a completely new system of working based on the latest technology, especially Blockchains, data analytics, and the internet of things
South Africa Has Started To Invest In Blockchain The importance of blockchain and its real-world use cases are at an all-time high. Like many other governments, South Africa has already put in the efforts and research team for investigating the potentials of cryptocurrencies and blockchain.
The South African Reserve Bank (SARB) has started the project Koha with the help from Financial Intelligence Centre, Financial Sector Conduct Authority, and Treasury and the SA Revenue Service.
The research body behind the investigation of the possibilities has come up with positive results. The SARB has found a positive outcome from the trails of settling high volumes of payments using the Blockchain.
The implementations and trials for blockchain based financial system have been going on in the country for quite some time now. If the current president goes on to win the scheduled May elections, chances are South Africa would implement Blockchain based industrial use cases on a larger scale. Hopefully, the president keeps his focus intact, the South African people can hope for a brighter future.
Conclusion The main aim behind the invention of Bitcoin was to help the people in underdeveloped and developing countries, by providing them with a financial system far from the clutches of few elites. However, the noise around the market value and its prices deviated the focus from the main goal.
2018 market crash has made many to rethink the value and need of Bitcoin and why the underneath technology of Blockchain is far more superior than its by-products. As of today the adoption and understanding have increased significantly and Blockchain is seen on par with the Artificial Intelligence. Hopefully, the approach continues, so that the countries like South Africa can come out of their decade long distress.

2018.08.05 19:45 ElysianDreams [CONFLICT] Operation Lancelot: Liberation of Northern Ethiopia

FLASH TRAFFIC COMMUNIQUÉ TO ALL UNITS AUSME AUETHCOM ADDIS ABABA FROM AUETHCOM BY ORDER OF AU PEACE AND SECURITY COUNCIL MESSAGE BEGINS
From Lieutenant General Serena Kabeya (iKaaja Army), Commanding Officer, African Union Stabilisation Mission in Ethiopia
With the situation in Ethiopia rapidly deteriorating, resulting in the isolation of African Union troops in Asmara as well as the overrunning of numerous local army units loyal to Addis Ababa, AUETHCOM has been authorised to bring about a resolution to the North Ethiopian royalist insurrection through kinetic means. Your commands are to pacify the rebel-held region centred around Gondar and to bring Lideta Zera Yacob's monarchist insurrectionist forces to the negotiating table in compliance with the African Union's mandate to support the legal central government of Ethiopia.
All armed individuals or groups in the region are to be treated as lawful combatants, with all the privileges that entails. Any prisoners shall be kept for trial by civilian authorities at a later date.
Of immediate priority will be the relief and reinforcement of the Nigerian 801st Air Command isolated and surrounded at Asmara, along with the seizure of the Lake Tana region and the royalist capital at Gondar. The former is crucial to secure the largest source of water in Ethiopia and to prevent the royalist movement from affecting water security downstream of the Nile, while the latter will be a large symbolic victory against the monarchist rebels.
The bulk of AUSME's logistics will be centred around Addis Ababa International Airport, while Bahir Dar Airport on the shores of Lake Tana will be the main FOB for the northern campaign. Extant Ethiopian military stockpiles will be drawn upon to sustain Op. LANCELOT, thus reducing the stress that will be placed upon AUSME's supply chain by the rigours of conventional manoeuvre warfare.
You have your orders. Make it so.
FLASH TRAFFIC ORDERS OF THE DAY AU STABILISATION MISSION ETHIOPIA MESSAGE BEGINS
Quote of the day: Strike an enemy once and for all. Let him cease to exist as a tribe or he will live to fly in your throat again.

Operation: Lancelot

Relieving Asmara

44 Parachute Regiment under Brig. Gen. David van Velden will execute a combat jump to the Nigerian 801st Air Command and 4th Air Cavalry Brigade under Brig. Gen. Nwabudike Okonkwo in Asmara, relying on surprise and air support from the offshore UKN Task Force GOTHIC. At the same time, 51 South African Seaborne Brigade under Brig. Gen. Vishnu Venkataraman will land at the port city of Massawa, capturing the harbour and permitting reinforcements to be sealifted to northern Ethiopia. Once Massawa is secure, 51 Brigade will push southwest along the P1 highway to relieve the troops at Asmara, while the 6ème Brigade Légère (Congolaise) commanded by Brig. Gen. Anne-Marie Mirindi will land at Massawa (both by sea and by air) to secure a line of supply.
Overall command of the Asmara theatre will be granted to Maj. Gen. Risala Anuru (iKaaja Army). Approximately 12,590 iKaajan troops have been dedicated to the relief of Asmara and its 5000-strong Nigerian 4th Air Cavalry Brigade garrison.

Liberating Mek'ele

The Nigerian 27th Motorised Brigade under Brig. Gen. Chika Uzochukwu, 8th Mechanised Brigade under Brig. Gen. Amarachi Uchie, and 2nd Motorised Brigade under Brig. Gen. Amarachi Uchie will be charged with the liberation of the Tigrayan capital of Mek'ele. Supported by 46 South African Motorised Brigade led by Brig. Gen. Adriaan Van Straaten, the Mek'ele operation will be a straight thrust north along Route 2 from Dessie parallel to the Afar Depression. Extensive air support will be provided by UKAF and NAF assets out of Hargeisa and Dessie-Kombolcha, a necessity given the push through over three hundred kilometres of highlands and mountain passes.
Overall command of the Mek'ele theatre will be granted to Lt. Gen. Benjamin Akande (Nigerian Army), with 20,620 personnel under arms.

Taking Gondar

As the capital of the royalist insurrection movement, the liberation of Gondar is the main objective of Op. LANCELOT. Given the relatively level terrain in the western Ethiopian plateau around Lake Tana, AU armoured formations will form the spearhead of the strike at Gondar. 45 South African Armoured Brigade under Brig. Gen. Alexandra Tshenolo along with the 1ère Brigade (malgache) légère led by Brig. Gen. Arsène Rajoarimanana will push northeast along Route 3 from Bahir Dar, while 71 Airmobile Brigade under Brig. Gen. Nyenyedzi Dumbutshena mounted in amphibious CC-152 Groot Otter aircraft will assault the lakeside city of Gorgora just south of Gondar.
Meanwhile, the Nigerian 2nd Armoured Brigade and 9th Mechanised Brigade led by Brig. Gen. Nkrumah Gyambibi and Brig. Gen. Rasheed Moutari respectively will circle around the west of Lake Tana, exploiting their mobility to encircle royalist troops and place pressure on Gondar from both sides.
The strike at Gondar will be managed by Lt. Gen. Serena Kabeya (iKaaja Army), with 25,480 troops being assigned to this objective.
In all cases, local forces loyal to Addis Ababa are expected to perform rear echelon security and mopping-up operations, as well as law enforcement and civilian pacification.

46 South African Motorised Brigade

HQ: JOHANNESBURG
Heavily equipped and well-trained, 46 SA Motorised Brigade is garrisoned in and around the Johannesburg metropolitan area - South Africa's largest urban agglomeration and one of the largest in the world. This brigade is optimised for low-intensity conflicts, nation-building, counter-insurgency, internal security, and reconnaissance. Consisting of three Mkhosini AFV-mounted infantry battalions and the Rooikat-equipped 2 Special Service Battalion, along with organic air defence and artillery elements, 46 Brigade is a highly flexible and capable force to be reckoned with.

51 South African Seaborne Brigade

HQ: CAPE TOWN
Garrisoned in the legislative capital of Cape Town, 51 SA Seaborne Brigade is roughly analogous to iKaaja's marines. These boys and girls are equipped with the Impisi IFV, and operate in tandem with the Union of iKaaja Navy's amphibious assault ships. Organic indirect fires, an attached armoured regiment, and air defence elements ensure that 51 Brigade can continue to fight even outside of the bubble of protection provided by the Navy, providing staying power and an offensive punch far above its weight class.

71 Airmobile Brigade

HQ: KITWE
Equipped with the CC-152 Groot Otter amphibious tactical transport, 71 Airmobile Brigade is outfitted as highly-mobile rapid response force. 71 Brigade consists of three light infantry battalions with organic support units, garrisoned in the city of Kitwe in central Zambia. The unit's mobility and tactical flexibility allows it to excel at unconventional warfare, although a lack of staying power and heavy weapons means that it cannot sustain high-intensity combat without support and relief from more conventional heavy units.

REGICIDE, thus reducing the stress that will be placed upon AUSME's supply chain by the rigours of conventional manoeuvre warfare.

Operation: Regicide

REGICIDE.

45 South African Armoured Brigade

HQ: UPINGTON
Garrisoned in the northwestern mining town of Upington, 45 SA Armoured Brigade is heavy brigade, consisting of two tank regiments and three mechanised infantry battalions. Much like 42 & 43 SA Armoured Brigade, 45 Brigade is intended for rapid high-intensity manoeuvre warfare. This comes at a cost, however, with the high weight of its vehicles rendering it unsuited for deployment by air.

2017.08.07 10:36 Markdd8 Great white shark populations are rising on both the east and west coasts. This might translate into a shark attack problem. If it does, should we cull the sharks to reduce the chance of attack? Does culling work?

Two separate questions sometimes unnecessarily conflated. If environmentally minded folks assert that we need to tolerate some human deaths to protect ocean ecosystems, that is a value judgment. (A key question here: What is a tolerable level of shark attack?)
In recent years the culling debate has shifted to the second question. Most supporters of culling believe that: 1) Culling is a fundamental process that works with all animals, to some degree, and 2) The notion that there is no correlation between a reduction of an animal population and that population’s sum impact on the environment is false. Opponents of culling assert the process is ineffective in increasing public safety.
Link to rise in shark populations
https://www.accuweather.com/en/weather-news/pacific-atlantic-ocean-shark/31924557
In recent years serious shark attack problems have occurred primarily along Australia and Reunion Island in the Indian Ocean. (South Africa reduces its shark risk with control measures.) Hawaii had a heated culling debate in the 1990s. The rising great white shark populations might bring the issue to the U.S. mainland. Discussion on both questions is warranted.
For question 2: Which of the following sets of statements about shark culling contains the most truth?*
Set 1
(Deakin University professor Laurie Laurenson) told the Australian media that reducing the number of sharks in an area did not reduce the likelihood of shark attack. “I can show statistically that there is no relationship between the number of sharks out there and the number of shark attacks."
From reprint of 9 Feb. 2016 article in The Herald, South Africa
https://www.pressreader.com/south-africa/the-herald-south-africa/20160209/281560879837183
“Shark bites on humans are not a governable event...the data show that there does not appear to be a relationship between shark culling and shark bite prevention.”
Christopher Neff, a contributor to the “Rebranding Sharks” campaign, in his article The Politics of Sharks Attack.
http://www.saveourseasmagazine.com/the-politics-of-sharks-attacks/
Set 2
“All of the programs (by the Natal Sharks Board) have been very successful in reducing the incidence of shark attack at the protected beaches...In (KwaZulu-Natal, South Africa), for example, 21 attacks occurred at the beaches of...Durban, in the decade prior to the introduction of nets in 1952...but there were no incidents involving large sharks in the subsequent 58 yrs...The benefit of the long-term deployment of shark nets and drumlines...is that the rate of occurrence of attacks is reduced significantly...”
*Responding to the Risk of White Shark Attack, Chapter 31 of Global Perspectives on the Biology and History of the Great White Shark, top p. 493.
Note : Pages 490-492 discuss the differences between 1) shark “hunts,” 2) short term shark-control programs, and 3) ongoing shark-control programs. The above statement refers to the latter.
